Concept Car: The BMW Concept 1 Series Coupe tii at the Tokyo Motor Show

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW), an independent German company, has unveiled its 1 Series Coupe tii at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. The vehicle is considered BMW s return to its roots, being the maker of high-performance, reasonably affordable sports coupes, a genre that harks back to the BMW 2002 of years ago.

Though BMW significantly calls the 1 Series tii as a design study it is yet to be production-bound. The German company said that the concept is intended to be œa young interpretation of classic BMW brand values while providing a suitable base for motorsports applications, both modern and classic. BMW s goal is to sustain the concept car with the company s compact, light and sporting coupes.

The BMW 1 Series will be in the form of two-door coupe, powered by a 230 horsepower 3.0 L six for the 328i model, or the 300 horsepower direct-injection 3.0 L twin turbo inline-six. It rests on 18-inch low-profile tires, which are mounted on five-spoke alloy wheels.

To put some difference between the Concept 1 Series tii and the standard 1 Series, BMW has provided the new version with aerodynamically optimized body, a wide range of weight-saving technologies and a well tailored interior.

The 21st century tii concept car is equipped with a couple of aerodynamic add-ons, such as front and rear airdams, side sills, rear diffuser and special Gurney flaps that works to exert extra downforce on the rear axle.

There has been a widespread use of carbon-fibre (an exceptionally strong lightweight material) components, including bonnet, mirror caps, air-scoops and others, to achieve a significant weight reduction in the series production cars.

The body was painted with Alpine White and was trimmed in blue. Stark contrast comes from the decal strips on the roof and deck lid together with carbon-fiber accents.

The interior is comprised with sport bucket seats with integral headrests and side airbags, along with a three-spoke sport steering wheel and shift knob covered in dark Alcantara. Among others trimmed with Alcantara were the seats, door panels and instrument panel. The entire cockpit has the combination of a triple-tone white, blue and black, which are the typical BMW colors. The use of such colors is part of the reincarnation of classic BMW motorsport models.

BMW, maker of elegant vehicles equipped with premium auto parts, including BMW Z3 parts, will have the 1 Series Coupe tii with starting price of just $30,000 when it becomes available in the market by next spring.
